From Cosí è (se vi pare) by Luigi Pirandello
Officine Papage and Teatro da Garagem
In a historical moment dominated by simplification, by the presumption of knowing and being able to know everything, by the saturation of information and by the instantaneity of communication — which fictitiously makes any place, any time, anything accessible — Pirandello's famous text (Cosi è (se vi pare)) that inspires this work still reveals its great relevance today, describing to the public, with a sharp lucidity, this chaotic, arrogant and dangerous present of ours.
We live in a time when truth has ceased to be a shared territory and has become an unstable matter, continuously deformed. We are immersed in a landscape made of fake news, identities fragmented into profiles and avatars, parallel narratives that contradict and overlap each other. Every day we are confronted with multiple versions of what happens, without being able to determine which one is the "true" one.
In this scenario, Cosi è (se vi pare) does not appear as a text of the past, but as the exact radiography of the present. Pirandello constructs a perfect mechanism to demonstrate that no testimony is reliable, that documents are insufficient, that all truth is a point of view.
Our work stems from a more intimate and urgent question:
How can we sustain that which cannot be fully known?
It is a question that concerns truth, but also—and perhaps above all—our capacity to accept the complexity of reality without reducing it, without simplifying it, without violating it in an attempt to fix it.
It is the question that runs through the city, the characters in the drama, the impossibility of being read unequivocally, and our contemporary gaze, which continually oscillates between the need to understand and the fear of failing.
