Johnny Hunter, drummer, composer and bandleader from Manchester, was named by Jazzwise as an "artist to watch". He formed his quartet in 2010 to explores the possibilities and challenges afforded by the absence of a harmony instrument. Compositions draw on the piano-less groups of Sonny Rollins and Joe Henderson through to those of John Zorn and Chris Speed, while leaning towards the more exploratory approach of Ornette Coleman, Henry Threadgill and Joe Harriott.
Hunter has taken his quartet to such esteemed venues as Ronnie Scott's, Birmingham Symphony Hall, Manchester Jazz Festival, Kings Place, and has also been recorded and broadcast by BBC Radio 3.
"Hard-grooving Jazz that's filtered through the investigation of the more unfamiliar" - Jazzwise
"Hunter rides the kit with commanding joi de vivre", "also a composer of considerable depth." - The Wire
Anna Chandler-King - Alto/Baritone Sax
Richard Foote - Trombone
Mick Bardon - Bass
Johnny Hunter - Drums
