With heavy thrums of detuned guitars entwined with layers of angelic airy vocals, the forthcomingnew album Strangest Feeling shows Bonniesongs’ masterful ability to balance sound and silence, reminding us that music, at its core, is simple vibration moving through air. Bonniesongs makesmusic that is both mellow and hazy and driven and edgy, traversing art-folk, psychedelia, dream-pop and grunge. She could also be compared to art-rock and alternative artists such as PJ Harvey,Feist and Grouper for her music’s raw, hypnotic qualities, although Bonniesongs’ style sits more ina ‘ethereal grunge’ category of its own, one she’s been carving out since her 2019’s debut albumEnergetic Mind (Small Pond/Art As Catharsis). Once described by artist Fink, who championedBonniesongs heavily on his KCRW radio show and toured Australia with her early this year ashaving “a deceptively hard edged soft-core.”
Emerging from the UK’s underground emo and experimental scenes in the early 2010s, Natalie Evans first gained attention with her debut EPHouses(2013), which showcased her signature use ofalternate tunings, fingerstyle guitar technique, and an introspective songwriting style. Her 2018debut full-length albumBetter at Night (Small Pond Records)further solidified her voice in theindie folk world, weaving themes of nostalgia, coming of age and solitude into an intimatesoundscape built on her three main instruments. In 2022, Evans released her sophomore albumMovements (Small Pond Records), which expanded her sonic palette with layered arrangementsand subtle electronic textures, while maintaining the heartfelt lyrical core that defines her work.Thealbum received critical praise for its emotional maturity and compositional ambition.
