Buffalo Tom is an American alternative rock band formed in 1986 in Boston, Massachusetts. The group's classic lineup consists of Bill Janovitz (vocals/guitar), Chris Colbourn (bass), and Tom Maginnis (drums).
The band emerged from the late-1980s American indie rock scene and was closely associated with fellow Boston band Dinosaur Jr.. Their early sound mixed fuzzy guitar distortion, melodic hooks, and introspective lyrics, drawing influence from punk and college rock.
Buffalo Tom gained wider attention in the early 1990s with albums like Let Me Come Over (1992) and Big Red Letter Day (1993), which featured popular alternative-radio tracks such as Taillights Fade and Soda Jerk. Their music blended raw indie energy with increasingly polished songwriting.
After releasing several albums through the 1990s, the band slowed activity around 1999 but reunited in the 2000s, continuing to record and tour. Later releases include Three Easy Pieces (2007) and Quiet and Peace (2018).
