Born out of the storied Philadelphia punk scene, BAR DUST is the region's premier Pogues cover band, featuring members of legendary homegrown acts Modern Baseball Foxtrot & the Get Down and more.
It all began when Modern Baseball and The Menzingers started appearing on the same bill around Philly. Sean Huber (Modern Baseball, Steady Hands) and Tom May (The Menzingers) connected over their affinity for Irish music and specifically, The Pogues. Starting a cover band composed of Philly punks wasn't just a good idea - it had to happen. But with world tours on the calendar and songs of their own to record, Sean and Tom were busy. The project would remain sidelined for a decade. Until...
Sean's friend, guitarist Brendan Monahan (Darla, SloTV, The Lower Aetna), revealed that he too had wanted to start a Pogues cover band. Growing up in a predominantly Irish-American community, Brendan was raised on this music and knew just the people to play it. Richie Straub (Steady Hands, The Lower Aetna, Hauntress), a longtime collaborator with Sean and Brendan, immediately signed on to hold down the drums. From there, more friends and musical partners were brought into the mix: Bassist Dylan
Gallimore (The Lower Aetna) joined to fill out the rhythm section, while Max Datner (Macky, The Lower Aetna) and Wil Schade (Foxtrot & The Get Down, Ocean Avenue Stompers) were recruited to play accordion and tin whistle, respectively. But there was still one missing link. All it took was a text from Sean to his old pal Tom: "remember that Pogues cover band we talked about ten years ago?" Bar Dust was formed.
The project was an immediate hit, with Pogues fans coming from far and wide to hear the band's rarely-performed catalog live (and loud). Bar Dust sold out their first two shows, quickly graduating to bigger venues and continuing to sell out dates. Their annual St. Patrick's Day Celebration has become a Philadelphia event, featuring special guests and an ever expanding set list. Spanning the Pogues entire discography, Bar Dust shows are celebrations of both big hits and lesser known gems. Impersonation is not the goal - capturing the spirit of the Pogues is. Bar Dust faithfully does this with energy, top tier musicianship, and a distinctively punk attitude rooted in the celtic music tradition. The band aims to provide a night you won't forget, filled with pints of beer, streams of whiskey, falls from grace, kisses for your love in dirty old towns, rainy nights, toasts to JFK, rolling hills, majestic rivers and lots of singing along. As their patron saint Shane MacGowan would say, "we'll have another round." Sláinte
