On Saturday 11th October, Leeds' top Latin/Brazilian music promoter DJ Lubi links up with the north of England's finest Brazilian music band Gustavo Andrade & The Brasukas for their annual autumn Brazilian show in Leeds. This year, the gig is at The Attic on Sheaf Street (near the Tetley development site), the first ever Brazilian music show at the venue. Support comes from Manchester bossa/samba jazz/MPB band Bacana, making their debut in Leeds.

Since they formed in 2023, Gustavo and the Brasukas played sold out shows at Band On The Wall Manchester, Peggy's Skylight Nottingham (twice), Blues Kitchen Manchester, Cobalt Studios Newcastle, The Jazz Bar Edinburgh, Whitley Bay Carnival (Tyne & Wear), Leeds Jazz Festival and Leeds venues Belgrave Music Hall, Brudenell Social Club, Headrow House and Hyde Park Book Club. In 2024 and 2025, they have done sold out Brazil Carnival north of England tours.

Brazilian saxophonist Gustavo Andrade came to Leeds from Sao Paulo in 2019 to study jazz at Leeds Conservatoire. Just as he started gigging with jazz, soul and hip-hop bands in 2020, the pandemic shut down society and gigs stopped. He returned in summer 2021 playing Brazilian music, and since then, he's lit up the Brazilian music scene in the north of England. First with his bossa jazz band Quinteto Gustavo Andrade and in recent times, with his 13 piece big band Gustavo Andrade & The Brasukas.

The Brasukas perform the full spectrum of Brazilian music - Samba, MPB (Música Popular Brasileiro), Bossa Nova, Samba Rock, Axé, Forró, Brazilian soul, Frevo and even Baile Funk - and feature top musicians from the Leeds jazz/world music scenes who play with bands like Plantfood, Carioca Soul, Orchestra Mambo International, Tempo Feliz, Awen Ensemble, Mangorata and Away From Home. They play Gustavo's arrangements of classic Brazilian music by artists such as Leci Brandao, Seu Jorge, Jorge Ben, Ivete Sangalo, Tim Maia, Tom Jobim, Gilberto Gil, Ed Motta, Alcione and Djavan.

There simply is no other Brazilian music band like them in the north, or even in the rest of the UK. With Gustavo and Portuguese singer Maya Blandy on lead vocals at the front, they also have two backing vocalists, a three piece horn section, two percussionists as well as bass, keys, guitar and drums. This is not light bossa nova background music but a full-on samba and axé explosion.

Support comes from Bacana, a Manchester-based band led by Beatriz Rodrigues (vocals) and Joel Arriaga (drums), celebrating the vibrant sounds of Brazil. With Paolo Fuschi (bass), and Diego Prato (guitar), rounding out the lineup, the band blends samba, bossa nova, MPB and Brazilian funk/soul from the 1960s to the 1980s. Their energetic performances feature classics from icons like Tim Maia, Elis Regina, and Jorge Ben Jor, along with hidden gems from across Brazil and the wider Portuguese-speaking world. Bacana Maresia delivers a vintage sound with modern flair and tonight, they make their debut in Leeds.

Come down and get some funky samba magic in your soul....a little bit of Rio sunshine for the chilly autumn nights.
