Words: Herman Dune, the most Californian of French songwriters and a defining figure of anti-folk, presents Odysse·s, a musical journey through his tumultuous life, set for release on June 13, 2025, via Santa Cruz Records. He will embark on a heroic solo tour across Europe and the UK. SUPPORT: Hayley Savage is a songwriter and guitarist blending folk and Americana with rich vocals, storytelling and intimacy. She supports Herman Dune at Komedia Brighton on Tuesday 21st October. Say you are going here.
Founded in the late 1990s, Herman Dune is the project of Franco-Swedish artist David Ivar. Drawing from folk influences (Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen), country (Townes Van Zandt, John Prine), and indie-folk (Elliot Smith, Lucinda Williams, Silver Jews), David Ivar, born and raised in Paris, had to create his own scene to express himself at a time when singing in English with an acoustic guitar on Parisian stages was considered absurd.
Since 2015, Herman Dune has been based in San Pedro, the working-class, port district of Los Angeles - a mecca of Californian punk rock (Minute Men, Black Flag) - with his wife and collaborator Mayon, and their three black cats. From his California bungalow, he runs his own label (Santa Cruz Records), has released six albums, out of a total of fifteen (Sweet Thursday, Santa Cruz Gold, Notes From Vinegar Hill, and the trilogy The Portable Herman Dune Vol. 1-3), and has composed several film scores, including Mariage Ó Mendoza and PÚtaouchnock (both by Edouard Deluc).
