Led by acclaimed trumpeter Jay Phelps, Jay’s Jitter Jive delivers a bold, brass-filled celebration of the swing era, bringing the sounds of 1930s Harlem into sharp, stylish focus. With a line-up of top-tier players and sharp arrangements that honour the likes of Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway and Count Basie, this is live jazz with its collar loosened and rhythm turned up.

Jay Phelps, a regular on the London jazz scene and a standout performer in the BBC’s Dancing on the Edge, is known for his work alongside Wynton Marsalis, Jazz Jamaica, and Amy Winehouse. His playing is all groove and precision, effortlessly carrying the band through hard-swinging classics like “It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing)” with flair and fire.

Formed in collaboration with pianist and musical director Mike Paul-Smith, also the founder of the UK’s renowned Down for the Count, the band brings together seasoned musicians who’ve performed at venues including Ronnie Scott’s, the Royal Albert Hall and international jazz festivals across Europe.

From tight horn riffs to powerhouse solos, Jay’s Jitter Jive leans into the joy of swing with style and character. Whether you know your Chick Webb from your Benny Carter or you’re just here for a good time, the energy is infectious, the musicianship top drawer and the vibe pitch-perfect for a night at Boisdale.
