'VISIONS VIRTUOSIC'
You thought Lang Lang and Yuja Wang were the only daring ones? Meet Julian Chan! By the time he's with us on 24 May, he'll have played Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No 3 and Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No 2 with Worthing's marvellous two orchestras, the Philharmonic in 2024 and the Symphony in 2026
Virtuosos need to be poets as well as performers on the high wire, at the edge of what's humanly possible. Julian's also bringing verse, rhythm, nuance and beauty, in music of multiple vision, purpose and expression
His 'Visions Virtuosic' programme, but not in running order:
- Schubert - Piano Sonata in C minor D958
- Beethoven - Piano Sonata in F# major Op78
- Chopin - Ballade No 2 in F major
- Godowsky - Java Suite selection
- Alkan - 'Aesop's Feast'
Audience interaction in the 'Ask A Question', 'Mystery Music' and 'What's The Story?' features

WHERE'S THE CONCERT? St Symphorian's Durrington Hill - Worthing BN13 2PU
Our International Interview Concerts venue is the most beautiful interior performing space we know in the town. Our expanding audiences quickly agreed when we were first there with Yi-Yang Chen on 25 May, then with Hamie Duo on 2 November. If you've never heard of the place, then do make this your own first visit! Your breath will be caught and your jaw will drop.
No pillars to spoil your view of anything.
No pews to regiment, segregate or discomfort your seating. It's soft, welcoming chairs!
The building is a coloured, unified wonder of stained glass windows and light, with picturesque organ pipes, barn roof, font, and spotlights on local history. Most striking of all, entered through a carved wooden screen, is its side chapel dedicated to two musical figures. It has two tall main windows. One portrays Miriam, playing a hand drum, duetting with a male angel who is playing a viol; the other St Cecilia herself - the patron saint of music - playing a hand-held bellows organette, with her partnering male angel lutenist. Memorable!
LOCATION
St Symphorian's is on the left-hand side, immediately north of the mini roundabout at the New Road/Salvington Road/Durrington Hill crossroads. There's acres of parking, all of it free - on site, on surrounding streets, and also in and behind Manor Parade shops precinct off Salvington Road (for 3hrs).
PUBLIC TRANSPORT
Our 2.45pm start time (doors 2.15) and 5.15 finish enables bus travellers to catch the Stagecoach No 5 back to Worthing from the Manor Parade bus stop 3 minutes away. It's a 20min ride from Worthing town centre. Outward journey from Worthing town centre: from South Street stop J.
WHAT ACTUALLY IS AN INTERVIEW CONCERT?
-
It's a full concert musical performance - plus conversations with the Host and a Guest Interviewer, meaning you meet the artistes, discovering their views and thoughts - and not just musical ones.
-
There are our own added features. If you like, you can 'Ask A Question', submitting it during the interval. Others exercise your imagination: you can make a suggestion in 'Give It A Title'. Or they exercise your memory or intuition, such as Mystery Music' or 'Guess The Composer'.
This time we've a new feature called 'What's The Story?'
-
'Set In The Round' means everyone's closer to the action, connected - and inspired. Including the attentive children you can bring for just £2 each. More seats viewing the piano keyboard. You can pick your own seat once you're in. Unlike normally seated concerts, the back row is very much nearer the action.
-
You'll feel a kindred spirit in the interaction among everyone there ,sharing this concert experience just like you.
