One of the north's top jazz/world music promoters, Lubi Jovanovic (aka DJ Lubi), is doing his first show at Kirkgate Community Centre, Shipley, on Saturday 20th December. A Shipley man since birth, he promotes great live shows in Leeds at venues such as Brudenell Social Club, Howard Assembly Room, Belgrave Music Hall, Hyde Park Book Club and The Attic. His debut KCC show is a big Afrofusion/World Jazz/Global Soul Christmas party featuring two great bands from the Leeds/Bradford area....Kontiki and LoVu....plus Lubi and guest DJs on the decks playing great global beats past, present and future.   

Kontiki are now a well established Afrofunk/Afro-Jazz unit whose band members are based in Bradford (including Shipley), and Leeds. To date, they have self-released three EPs/albums since 2019 - "Zucchini Weather", "Brother Chumbo" and "Mangrove Big Head" - and the latter two received support and airplay across Jazz FM, BBC 6 Music, Worldwide FM, BCB, Reform Radio and Totally Wired Radio. They've sold out/packed out Leeds venues such as Hyde Park Book Club and Hifi Club, and played shows across the north in York, Manchester, Sheffield, Hebden Bridge and Todmorden. They've also supported a host of African music artists in Leeds at Brudenell Social Club and Howard Assembly Room, including K.O.G, London Afrobeat Collective, ONIPA and Jembaa Groove. Pure Afrofunk fireworks meets psyche and jazz, 100% dancefloor friendly.

LoVu is the new project of Leeds based guitarist and producer Ben Haskins featuring some of the north of England's finest musicians from the jazz and world music scenes. The project reflects close musical relationships which have been fostered through collaboration over the years. Following a career as touring guitarist with artists such as Jasmine Myra (Gondwana Records), and K.O.G (with whom he appeared on "Later With Jools Holland" in 2024), LoVu is an outlet for Haskins' own original productions. In spring 2025, LoVu released their debut EP "Distill", a mix of afrobeat rhythms with jazz solos and electronic beats. It included collaborations with UK/Ghanaian singer/MC K.O.G, plus alt-pop artist Slip Martin.

DJ Lubi will spin some nice global grooves before, between and after the bands....afrobeat, highlife, afrofunk, Latin grooves, Brazilian beats...past and present. Guest DJs tbc. 
 
Doors 7.30pm. LoVu 8pm. Kontiki 9.15pm. Live music done by 10.30pm. DJs spinning until 11pm (maybe later if folks stay in).
