MELYS

Welsh treasures Melys are back in action! Formed in 1998, Melys quickly gained recognition with BBC Radio 1 support from Steve Lamacq, Mark Radcliffe and Marc Riley. The band went on to play 11 sessions and outside broadcasts for John Peel and Huw Stephens, winning Peel’s public-voted Festive 50 chart in 2001 with their song, Chinese Whispers. After a long sabbatical they have now returned after a successful UK tour with old friends The Wedding Present.

“Melys possess a grace and charm all of their own. A most disquieting, unsettling and pleasurable experience.” – NME

Melys formed in the Snowdonia village of Betws-y-Coed in the late 90s and quickly signed for legendary Welsh label Ankst, home to Super Furry Animals and Gorky's Zygotic Mynci. With daytime and evening Radio 1 plays from Radcliffe, Lamacq, Riley and Peel, the band signed a major deal, opened their own studio and label and went on to release four studio albums.

“Wondrous Welsh popsters…like Dusty Springfield backed by St Etienne. Lovely.” - THE GUARDIAN

After a long break, the band have been busy again, touring the UK with friends The Wedding Present and are currently in the studio on Anglesey mixing an album of new material with old friend and producer Gorwel Owen. New single ‘Santa Cruz’ precedes a full album, due for release on St. David’s Day – the band’s first new material in 20 years.

“For those who like their pop archetypically perfect with a fair measure of charm” - NME
