"Jimi Hendrix watched them rehearse, Stevie Wonder joined them on drums, and Fela Kuti partied with them in Lagos..." The Guardian Formed in London in 1969 by four African and three Caribbean musicians, Osibisa stand as the founding architects of Afro-rock. They were the first Black band to break The Marquee Club in 1971, earned two UK chart hits in 1976, and became one of the most influential African-heritage groups to emerge from Britain's music scene. Their fusion of African rhythms, Caribbean grooves, funk, jazz, rock, Latin and highlife shaped the early language of what later became known as world music. Their catalogue continues to resonate across generations, with Sunshine Day, Welcome Home and Music for Gong Gong remaining staples on global stages. Osibisa's legacy runs deep, cited by artists from Santana and Stevie Wonder to Al Green, Johnny Nash and Bob Marley. At Boisdale of Canary Wharf, the band bring their signature blend of driving percussion, soaring horns and richly textured arrangements - the sound that made them internationally recognised as the godfathers of Afro-rock.
