The Sue Ferris Quintet has had a variable line up since it's formation around the turn of the century...They are all fabulous players, but this particular quintet line up has recorded a CD called “That Shoe String Thing” named in honour of the small budget Sue had available to record it! All five musicians that feature on this album will perform live at The Globe.

Sue Ferris – saxophone/flute

Sue has been playing saxophone and flute for over 35 years in a variety of settings. These include classical, musical theatre and rock and pop, but she feels most creative when playing jazz in a small group or Big Band. She came to college in the North East in the late 1980's and stayed put, raising a family, now all in their teens.

?In the meantime, she has played extensively across the North East and beyond with bands such as Voice of the North jazz orchestra (collaborating with the likes of Bob Mintzer, Andy Sheppard, Alan Barnes, John Surman and more), Strictly Smokin' Big Band, Northern Monkey Brass Band, Discography and many more! She has also played shows in many of the major theatres.
Sue teaches extensively in schools and also has been instrumental tutor for degree courses, workshops and various ensembles.

Graham Hardy – trumpet/flugel

Graham is a North East based musician, composer, arranger, educator and music therapist.

He has worked within a wide range of musical genres with artists including Paul Edis, Kathryn Williams, Tim Garland and Jimmy Nail. As well as working as an in demand session player, Graham is a member of the acclaimed John Pope Quintet and currently leads the New Orleans inspired Northern Monkey Brass Band.

On completing a Masters in Music Therapy in 2021, Graham now also works as a music therapist for Nordoff and Robbins.

Ben Lawrence – piano

Ben is a young pianist from the North East now based in Cumbria. He is a versatile player inspired by a wide range of music across the jazz genre. Some of his influences are Mulgrew Miller, Robert Glasper and Taylor Eigsti. He has played across the country including at The Vortex jazz club and Pizza Express Live in Soho.

Andy Champion – double bass

Andy Champion is a bassist, composer and improviser who has worked extensively in the UK and Europe. Andy can most often be seen performing with his wife, the 2019 Parliamentary Jazz Awards Vocalist of the Year, Zoë Gilby. Andy led his own progressive jazz quintet, ACV, releasing two critically acclaimed albums and touring nationwide; most notably performing at the Edinburgh Festival for a live broadcast on BBC Radio 3.

For many years, Andy held the bass chair in Voice of the North Jazz Orchestra, led by the esteemed composer John Warren with featured artists including Bob Mintzer, John Surman and Andy Sheppard. In addition to this, Andy has performed with Jim Mullen, Ingrid Jensen, Tony Kofi and Jason Yarde amongst others; and was a featured soloist with the Northern Sinfonia alongside Henry Lowther and Tim Whitehead for their 2013 performance of Ian Carr’s ‘Northumbrian Sketches’.

In 2013, he was awarded a place on Serious’ ‘Take Five’ development scheme for outstanding young musicians. Aside from his work in jazz, Andy plays in a number of improvised music settings including SHIVER with Chris Sharkey, Corey Mwamba’s NTH and has also performed and recorded with major international figures including Marilyn Crispell, Matt Manari, Eugene Chadbourne and Marc Ducret.

John Bradford – drums

John is one of the most in demand musicians in the North of England. He is a versatile drummer who specialises in jazz and improvised music. John has shared the stage with many talented performers including Alan Barnes, Alex Clarke, Ingrid Jensen and Paul Edis. John is currently touring the UK with the 2019 Parliamentary Jazz Vocalist of the Year Zoe Gilby, and is seen regularly performing around the busy North East jazz scene.
