Transatlantic folk band The Magpies are rapidly becoming one of the most exciting and innovative acts on the contemporary roots scene. Their sublime harmonies, exquisite musicianship and impressive songwriting draw together Anglo and American traditions, weaving Celtic folk, bluegrass and Appalachian influences into a seamless, modern sound.

Founding members Bella Gaffney (award-winning singer-songwriter, guitarist and banjoist) and Holly Brandon (acclaimed fiddle player and tunesmith) perform alongside gifted singer-songwriter and guitarist Ellie Gowers and leading clawhammer banjo player Kate Griffin. Together, they craft a fresh brand of transatlantic folk with a strong thread of feminism and gender equality running through their music.

Following their critically acclaimed debut album in 2020, The Magpies released their second album Undertow in 2022-an elegant showcase of intricate harmonies, flawless instrumentation and compelling storytelling. Its success was immediate: over a quarter of a million Spotify streams, a place in the Official Folk Albums Chart Top 40 and a BBC Radio 2 live session. Their 2026 EP The One Thing That I Know has been described as "terribly beautiful".

On stage, The Magpies are known for high-energy performances and wry delivery, transporting audiences with ethereal voices and glistening instrumentals. They have toured extensively across the UK, with festival highlights including Glastonbury, Cambridge, Larmer Tree, Shambala, Towersey and Deer Shed, and have performed internationally in the USA, Canada, Ireland, Portugal and Luxembourg.

They are also the creators and hosts of the fast-growing Magpies Festival, set in the parkland of York's Sutton Park Stately Home-an event celebrated for its top-quality line-ups and commitment to inclusivity in the music industry.
