The Sugarhill Gang is a pioneering hip-hop group formed in Englewood, New Jersey, in 1979, widely credited for bringing rap music to mainstream audiences. Their groundbreaking single, "Rapper's Delight" (1979), is considered the first rap hit, reaching No. 36 on the Billboard Hot 100 and selling millions of copies globally. This track introduced hip-hop culture to the world and is preserved in the National Recording Registry. Members Wonder Mike, Big Bank Hank, and Master Gee became synonymous with early hip-hop. The group's legacy includes a Grammy Hall of Fame induction and influence that paved the way for the global rap phenomenon.
