A master of rhythm and rhyme, Tippa’s career began in the early 1980s as part of Brixton’s Saxon Sound System, the groundbreaking collective that redefined the UK reggae scene and introduced the fast-chat MC style to a global audience. Visit our Hine Bar and Heated Garden Terrace located on the 1st floor for pre & post-show drinks!
Saxon Sound was more than a sound system. It was a cultural landmark that produced some of the most influential British MCs and singers of a generation. Tippa’s sharp delivery and unmistakable vocal style quickly made him one of its brightest stars. In 1986, his single “Hello Darling” became a UK Top 30 hit, marking a breakthrough moment for British-born reggae artists on the charts.
Tippa’s influence extends far beyond reggae circles. His lyrical skill and playful but conscious songwriting caught the attention of global stars, leading to collaborations with The Black Eyed Peas on their worldwide hit “Hey Mama”, as well as work with musical legends including UB40, Maxi Priest and Dennis Brown. His style, rooted in dancehall and lovers rock, has also left its mark on everything from UK garage to grime.
His latest album “I’m An African” is a vibrant reflection of identity and heritage, blending modern production with roots reggae, dancehall and afrobeats influences. It highlights Tippa’s ability to evolve with the times while remaining true to the rich sounds and stories that shaped him.
On stage, Tippa Irie remains one of the most charismatic performers in the business. Backed by The Upper Cut Band, known for their rich, groove-driven sound, he delivers a live show packed with rhythm, energy and sharp lyrical flow. With over four decades of global touring, a Grammy nomination and a catalogue that helped define UK reggae, Tippa Irie brings living history, performed with heart and style.
