Ladies, has it ever happened to you to hear the question: “Darling, what is that man doing in our
bedroom?” Or perhaps, gentlemen, have you ever found yourself asking such a question? Either
way, remember that in every situation — even the one that looks the worst — there is always… an
emergency exit.
And indeed, “Emergency Exit” by Arthur J. Newfield is a hilarious and wonderfully twisted comedy,
in which brilliant dialogue and dizzying on-stage mishaps — accompanied by bursts of laughter
from the audience — lead the characters inevitably toward disaster. Unless… unless they find
some kind of emergency exit.
It’s rather difficult, however, to find any exit when you’re sitting naked in a wardrobe in someone
else’s bedroom, while nearby, in the marital bed, your lover’s husband — who, unfortunately, is also
her husband — is making himself comfortable after returning unexpectedly from a business trip…
Of course, one mustn’t forget that there’s usually a balcony nearby that could save the situation. But
when you’re on the 9th floor, and the neighboring balcony is quite a distance away, this particular
emergency exit becomes… complicated.
Especially when someone else — another lover of another wife — has chosen the very same route,
only in the opposite direction, from another balcony of another apartment. Particularly if it turns out
to be your apartment, your balcony, and your wife… Only the lover isn’t yours — he’s your wife’s.
And, to make matters worse, he’s also your closest friend… who insists that he’s not your wife’s
lover at all, but rather the lover of your lover — whose husband now firmly believes that you are
your own wife’s lover, and that your wife is the wife of your friend, who is her lover, but not the lover
of his own wife, whose lover is, in fact, you…
Meanwhile, your wife is with her lover in your apartment while you’re supposedly away on a
business trip — though in reality, you’re in the apartment next door with your lover, whose husband
has just returned early from his business trip, which is why you’re now sitting naked in the wardrobe
