FAIRY TALES FROM THE EAST

Improvisation is storytelling, but what stories? Did you grow up with the Western fairy tale of “Cinderella”? Or with Eastern folklore, such as “The Ox and the Kancil”? It's time to hear these stories from other parts of the world! You will become open to other cultures, learn to play even when you don't know the references, and realize that you may know more about your own cultural roots than you think.

About AREE WITOELAR:

He is an Indonesian-Norwegian teacher, director, and improvisational artist living in Oslo. Aree is the artistic director of the Oslo Impro Festival 2025 and founder of Impro Neuf International. Having lived half his life in Asia and half in Europe, devoting himself to science and the arts, he believes that improvisation is the perfect art form for expressing the self. He started improvising in the Netherlands in 2005 while studying physics and discovered that improvisation balanced science with the joy of spontaneity. He took this passion to Oslo, where he created a vibrant international improvisation community in 2015. He has taught at festivals throughout Europe (Norway, the Netherlands, Estonia, Germany, the United Kingdom, Bulgaria) and Asia (Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines).

She loves all forms of improvisation. She has participated in the short comedy “Stranger Things Have Happened,” the comedy-drama “The Improv Speakeasy,” and the Asian play “Herring & Chopsticks.” Aree loves both silly and intellectual fun, with influences from Susan Messing, Jay Sukow, Will Hines, Jason Shotts, Andel Sudik, and Laxmi Priya. However, she believes that the best improvisation is yet to come, when East meets West. Her mission is to make improvisation a global art form, where anyone can bring their culture to the stage.
